| One guy's loss is not another guy's concern
I hadn't worked alongside Gary Solomon at a motorcycle dealership in Aspinwall in more than eight years, so I wasn't expecting to hear from him. We were, after all, only the most casual of friends, and guys generally don't write to distant acquaintances unless there is a good reason. Suspecting to receive a pitch for some sort of long-distance phone service, I refrained from answering his first queries. But when the messages started appearing in my e-mail inbox two, sometimes three at a time, I finally relented and popped one open. Much to my surprise, Gary hadn't become a salesman for a new cellular communications company, and he wasn't here to clue me in on an exciting new offer about natural male enhancement. .
Insane much?
Susan Powter said she isn't going anywhere without her message. In fact, the woman who coined the phrase "Stop the Insanity!," said she is freer now than she has been to tell it like it is. "It doesn't matter who you are or what political party you are from, if you are man or woman or black or white, you must have one thing to live," said Powter. "Everyone needs oxygen. You need it for the rest of your life. Period. That's the end." Powter is the third speaker in Smart Talk, a five-month lecture series. She will speak at 7:30 p.m. March 19 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Powter, who did this interview last week on the phone from California, was shooting an episode of "The Simple Life" with Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton.

Artery hardening is chief killer
Dear Dr. Donohue: Would you please discuss the problem of arteriosclerosis and how it affects the body? Is it connected to cholesterol? Is there any connection with hardening of the arteries? What are its causes and treatment? I am sure there are a great many people affected by this disease. A.S. Dear A.S.: "A great many people" is an understatement. It's the No. 1 cause of death in Canada and the United States. Arteriosclerosis (are-TEAR-ree-oh-skluh-ROW-suss) is artery hardening -- "sclerosis" means "hardening." Atherosclerosis (ATH-ur-oh-skluh-ROW-suss) -- a buildup of cholesterol and fat in arteries -- is the most common kind of arteriosclerosis. Cholesterol has everything to do with it. The causes are familiar to you, but they might not have been spelled out as the causes of artery hardening.
Weis Trial Ends in Mistrial
An unnamed juror collapsed during testimony at the Weis Trial in Boston Tuesday morning. The juror began moaning while a defense expert witness was on the stand. Doctors in the courtroom, including the two defendants, helped the juror before he was taken away in an ambulance. Weis is suing Doctors Charles Ferguson and Richard Hodin. His suit says the two failed to recognize life threatening conditions after Weis' gastric bypass surgery in 2002. Once Ferguson and Hodin helped the juror, Weis' laywer asked for a mistrial. The judge in the case agreed and ended the trial. .
